Thailand tax-efficient life insurance — how to protect your family and cut your tax bill

Thailand offers one of the most generous life insurance tax deductions in Southeast Asia. If you pay Thai personal income tax, a qualifying life insurance policy is one of the smartest financial moves you can make.

What is the Thai life insurance tax deduction?

Under the Thai Revenue Code, if you are a Thai tax resident and you pay premiums on a qualifying life insurance policy, you can deduct qualifying premiums from your assessable income before calculating your income tax.

This is a direct reduction in the income you're taxed on — not a small credit. The exact amount you save depends on your tax bracket and the premiums you pay.

In short: the government is effectively subsidising part of your life insurance premium. There is almost no situation where an eligible expat should not take advantage of this.

Who qualifies?

You are a Thai tax resident (live in Thailand 180+ days/year)
You hold a valid Thai work permit or qualifying long-term visa
Your policy is with a Thai OIC-licensed insurer
The policy term is a minimum of 10 years
You are the policyholder (not a spouse or family member's policy)
You are within the insurer's entry age

Your potential saving

The amount you save depends on your personal income tax bracket and the premiums you pay. The higher your tax rate, the more valuable the deduction. A qualified Thai tax advisor can give you a precise figure based on your circumstances.

Beyond the basic deduction — additional savings

Pension insurance (annuity plans)

Separate from the life insurance deduction, qualifying annuity/pension insurance premiums can be deducted each year. This is a separate limit and requires a different type of policy that pays out from age 55+.

Combined retirement cap

The pension insurance deduction combines with RMF and ESG funds toward a combined retirement savings cap each year. If you're serious about tax optimisation, a Thai-qualified financial advisor can build a comprehensive strategy.
